Intro
“‘… …তুই হেথা কেন ওরে’
মা শুধালো; সে কহিল, ‘যাইব সাগরে।’
‘যাইবি সাগরে! আরে, ওরে দস্যু ছেলে,
নেমে আয়।’ পুনরায় দৃঢ় চক্ষু মেলে সে
কহিল দুটি কথা, “যাইব সাগরে।'”
— দেবতার গ্রাস, Rabindranath Tagore
“You cannot say, or guess, for you know only
A heap of broken images, where the sun beats…'”
— The Waste Land, Thomas Eliot
Most people call me Sagar. ‘Sagar’ is a Sanskrit word meaning ocean or sea. My name pronounces as /ʃagor/ or Shagor in my native tounge Bangla (click below to play)–
or more authentically as follows –
However, these pronunciations are slightly different than the ‘original’ Sanskrit pronunciation /sāgara/ or /sāgar/.
I am a gradute student studying Materials Science, Physics and Planetary Science. I am intending to be a researcher in Physics of Complex systems🤞, although I have interest literally in all branches of Physics and Mathematics. But hey, we are all constrained by time and who knows by brain too😐.
I love solving problems, imagining, reading, running, swimming, hiking and many more things (just tell me what it is, I will accompany you; but please don’t make me watch a TV series)! I also love to spend time with my family members. More recently I got into cooking, partiularly making traditional Bengali dishes.
Sometimes, I like to do nothing, I mean absolutely nothing! Those times I will just lie down in the bed and look at a dot in the ceiling until things get blur and I will probably completely be lost in sort of a foggy warmth of disconnected thoughts. You know, those moments, when you are looking at something with wide open eyes but not seeing anything!
Bengali is my mother tounge, I can understand a poetic language called Brajabuli which is essentially a language made up mixing Bengali and Maithili to write sweet lyrical poems. I am fairly okay with English, I understand a very little bit of German and familiar with French alphabet.

At the same time I am carrying out my research in the Department of Physics under the affiliation of Department of Materials Science and Engineering at University of Arkansas on Titan. My research combines ideas and techniques from Statistical Physics, Complex Systems, Planetary Chemistry and Computational Physics. Please go to the next section for more details.
Before moving to Fayetteville, I briefly worked at BRAC University, Bangladesh as a teaching assistant. Prior to that I used to tutor Physics and Mathematics to 9-12th graders.
Research
I am working on Titan, a very interesting satellite and the largest of Saturn. Titan is the only planetary body other than earth in the entire solar system that contains a large stable amount of liquid. In my current project I am trying to understand the Dynamic Properties of Acetonitrile in the Atmosphere and Surface of Titan implementing Molecular Dyamics simulation methods.
There is a range of candidate molecules found in Titan which I plan to computatioanlly study in my upcoming project.
I have participated in Lunar and Planetary Science Conference 2024, Houston, Texas, where I presented a poster on the Supercooled and Glassy States of Acetonitrile. I was funded by GPSC and GSIE. Here is me with my poster:
The baggages you can see below the poster stand are absolutely not part of my research or the presentation, they are just there! I look bit spooky but I guess that is okay, because as far as I can remember I did not scare anybody off in Houston.
I also have participated in HPC and Data Science Summer Institute 2023 at UC San Diego with my travel and stay funded by NSF and Department of Physics, University of Arkansas.
Academic Studies
As you already know, I am pursuing my Graduate studies at University of Arkansas, Fayetteville!
Prior to that I did two online semesters at the University of Goettingen in the late COVID period! Even prior to that I spent two online semesters at SKKU, Suwon right in the middle of COVID with everything shut down everywhere in the world except with my computer open. COVID, in any fair bid, was not a good time!
I have studied at University of Dhaka earlier and pursued Physics there. It was not ONLINE! I had to do 8 to 5 classes and labs, such tyranny for a long long time, phew!
Here are few things I have, to some extent, studied in different places–
Institution | Courses/Topics |
University of Arkansas | Mathematical Methods of Physics, Professoriate Fundamentals, Statistical Mechanics, Advanced Electromagnetic Theory I, Nanofabrication, Quantum Mechanics I, Advanced Numerical Methods, Materials Characterization, Science Ethics, Lab Safety, Research Ethics, Nanostructures, Computational Materials Science, Fundamentals of Materials Science, Class and Lab methods of Teaching Physics |
University of Goettingen | Bits of Quantum Mechanics, Statistical Mechanics, Computational Physics, Solid State Physics, German Language A1 |
SKKU, Suwon | Honestly I have forgotten what I have studied there! But probably, Photonic Semiconductors and Devices, maybe Advanced Material Convergence and Application, Lab Safety etc. Gosh, I really forgot! |
University of Dhaka | Electricity and Magnetism, Newtonian Mechanics, Thermal Physics, General Chemistry, Basic Calculus, Linear Algebra, Introductory Statistics, Modern Physics, Mathematical Physics, Optics, Waves and Oscillations, Electronics, Vector Calculus, Ordinary Differential Equations, Numerical Methods, Probabilty, Classical Mechanics, Classical Electrodynamics, Introductory Quantum Mechanics, Nuclear Physics, Introductory Solid State Physics, Laser Physics, Statistical Mechanics, Advanced Quantum Mechanics, Advanced Solid State Physics, Advanced Nuclear Physics, Computational Physics, Digital Electronics, Methods of Experimental Physics, General Relativity, and bits of Non-equilibrium Statistical Mechanics, Materials Physics, Quantum Field Theory, Atmospheric Physics and lots of lots of Physics labs. |
Way to go!
I recieved primary education from my village school, highschool education from Barair High School, a school one mile away from my village! I went to Govt. Science College, Tejgaon, Dhaka for Intermediates.
Publications
I am a very new apprentice researcher; have just one conference paper. Find my research at (please, do not be disappointed if you did not find anything huge) my Google Scholar profile.
Currently a manuscript is under preparation on the Supercooled and Glassy States of Acetonitrile in Titan-like conditions.
Also find me at my ORCID .
Non-academic Activity/Job/s
In summer 2023, I worked briefly as a Housing Dispatch, and as an Hourly at Mullins Library at University of Arkansas as part of summer employment.
I am currently a Cross Cultural Mentor (CCM) with International Students and Scholars at University of Arkansas. I have volunteered an approximate total of 180+ hours as a CCM. I have previously served in 2023-24 academic year and continuing to serve in 2024-25 academic year.
Besides that, I am a Member of International Culture Team (ICT), volunteered at Faytteville Public Library and so on. Well, here goes a list my community engagements–
Role | Responsibility/Serving hours |
CCM, University of Arkansas | 180+ hours |
Member of ICT, University of Arkansas | 40+ hours |
Founding Cabinet Member, South Asian Student Organization, University of Arkansas | Unknown! Really do not know, many unaccounted hours! |
Volunteer, Fayettville Public Library | 12+ hours |
Volunteer, Cobblestone Farms | 18+ hours |
Volunteer, Tri-cycle Farms | 2+ hours |
Tutor, Kid’s Life after School, Lifesource International | It was a previlige to be able to tutor the kids at Lifesource. The kids were absolutely adorable! |

Non-academic Studies
I have read গল্পগুচ্ছ (Stories), ডাকঘর (The Post Office) by Rabindranath Tagore, আম-আঁটির ভেঁপু (The Cotyledon Honk) by Bibhutibhushan Bandyopadhyay, আবোল তাবোল (The Wierd and the Absurd) by Sukumar Ray, ধূসর পান্ডুলিপি (The Grey Manuscript) by Jibananda Das, বাড়ী থেকে পালিয়ে (The Runaway) by Shibram Chakrabarty and the Happy Prince and Other Stories by Oscar Wilde… .
I have not yet read জীবন স্মৃতি (My Reminiscences) by Tagore and ঈশ্বর পৃথিবী ভালবাসা (God Earth Love), ভালবাসা পৃথিবী ঈশ্বর(Earth Love God) by Shibram! I saved them for later. Actually… I have stealthily read a good 30-40 pages from these books—I was so darn greedy!
Personal Life
I was born in September, 1994, in a moslty beautiful but weird named village called Bharicotta in Cumilla, Bangladesh. My maternal grandpa and grandma, who lived some 15 miles away in another village called Nabiabad, hired a band party and came playing music and dancing all the way to our village on my Yatra/Jatra day. I assume they wanted to make some noise because I was their first grandkid. However, I am not sure if I liked all the noise on the 9th day of my birth, I totally do not remember. Maybe I did, I need to ask my parents and grandma about that. My brother followed me in 1996, and I also do not recall anything about those days.
Looking back, the earliest times in my life I can vaguely remember is some time before 1998— some instances of my maternal grandpa visitng us along with grandma, or me going to to visit them and so on. I was just two/three years old, but somehow I remember those times? Strange!
In 1998, my maternal grandpa died and there was a really big flood that year! Our village got entirely flooded. My grandparents house, on the other hand, was pretty dry. So on the request of my parents my eldest paternal uncle transported a four year old me to there carrying me on his shoulder saving me from water whereas he himself was pushing through chest-high water. Well, not just my grandpa, grandma or my uncles, on my growing up I received immense amount of love and care from everyone around me. I have started to write about them seperately here, so I will not get into detail at the moment but will touch upon occasionally.
Both of my grandpas were great Men, they broke barriers, they stood out in an enviroment which was not very conducive for learning, growth or bringing up kids. Interestingly, they both have similar sounding names– Ananda Roy (AR) is paternal grandfather and Gobinda Roy (GR) is my maternal grandfather. GR died, as you know, in 1998! He was a venture capitalist, an entrepreneur, he invested in stock market, worked 4/5 corporate jobs, he made money and lost money, he was exceptionally kind (his friends still recall him for that) generally, was famously known among locals and his peers for his very good fluency in English language. But, maybe most importantly, he was serious about the education of his kids…
